Utilizing new technology at the nation’s ports is imperative to the future safety of its important import areas.  As times advance and those seeking to get illegal goods, substances and people throw the borders become more complex, the ports, too, must update their processes to stay ahead of those individuals.  Similar to those moving drugs over the borders and within the United States, the only way such movement can be prevented is to stay ahead of the traffickers one step at a time.  To help with this challenge, port security must use every thing they have in their arsenal to their advantage including new and upcoming technologies.  The use of x-ray, thermal imaging, alert dogs, etc. all help to give port security an advantage in the war on terrorism and illegal trafficking.  This technology is used to add to the eyes and ears of port employees and make security at any port both fast, efficient and thorough.  Without the technology, the process would take much longer and slow the flow of good and materials into the country and to the people.

2. How does situational awareness and situational readiness affect port safety and emergency management?

Situational awareness is a vital to the safety of the ports, its people and the nation.  People working at the ports, as with any other position, must be aware of their surroundings at all times.  It is vital to the individual’s safety and the safety of others that they become familiar with their surroundings and be alert enough to take note of any changes in the areas around them.  When working with a group of individuals, one must rely on their employees to help them in maintaining the safety of the facility when they cannot possibly be everywhere all at once.  The everyday workers see and know their places of employment very well, possibly better than the managers that get tied up in the office dealing with paperwork.  They are much more likely to noticing small changes in their environment and in the people they work closely with daily.  Those slight changes can make a huge difference in the safety of every employee on site.

When employees notice these slight changes, it is important that they report them to their port security officers.  The security officers can then take the necessary measures to help better security and keep the ports running smoothly.
