A comparative analysis compares and contrast two concepts/ ideas/ things that familiar although have crucial differences.
You will compare your culture with any other culture of your choice.
How to start your comparative analysis
· Become familiar with culture frameworks such as Hofstede, Globe project, Trompenaars and Ferraro described in the text book and resources.
· Make sure that you have address the following criteria
o Applies cultural Framework
o Demonstrates ability to compare and contrast
o Demonstrates ability to relate cultural aspects to the global business environment
o Clarity and appropriateness of expression
· There are 5 steps you need to follow when writing a comparative analysis:
o Step1: Frame of reference :
§ your frame of reference is the context you place the two cultures you are comparing and contrasting
§ It is your umbrella under which you have chosen the culture dimension
o Step2: Ground for comparison
§ The grounds of comparison is your rationale behind your choice of cultural dimension.
§ It tells the reader that you have made a deliberate and meaningful choice
o Step3: Thesis
§ Your thesis is your argument
§ Are the two cultures more similar or more different to each other?
o Step4: Organisational scheme:
§ There are two basic ways to organise the body of your work:
§ Text by text, you discuss all of A and then discuss all of B
§ Point by point, you alternate points about A with comparable points about B.
o Step5: Linking A&B
§ Your need to link each point in the argument back to the thesis
§ Use transitional expressions of comparison and contrast ( similarly, moreover, likewise, on the contrary, on the other hand) and contrastive vocabulary ( southerner/northerner).
