Identify three primary types of energy that power your home as well as all of the homes in your community. You may find this information on your community Web site or the Web sites of the local power companies. For example, your community may use electricity and solar panels.

It is easy to criticize society for not using renewable resources, but in reality, how difficult would this transition be? What processes and procedures would be involved? How would such a transition be made?

The purpose of this assignment is for you to consider what type of energy your neighborhood is currently powered by and what it would really take to convert this source to a renewable one. How much would it take to switch your community to a renewable resource and what would this mean for the environment?

For the assignment, complete the following:

  • Identify three primary types of energy that power your home as well as all of the homes in your community. You may find this information on your community Web site or the Web sites of the local power companies. For example, your community may use electricity and solar panels.
  • Explain how the sources of energy you identified impact the environment. Consider the following:
    • Does the use of these types of energy resource have a negative impact on the environment in your area?
    • Does your community have nuclear waste to dispose of?
    • Has your community always used these three power sources? If so, how do you feel this has impacted the environment over time?
    • How much of an impact have these sources of energy had on local air and water quality?
  • Considering the current source(s) of power available, determine how much energy your house uses each month. You can find this information on your monthly energy bill.Calculate your annual usage for a year. Using this value, estimate the energy consumption for your community. The US Census Bureau is one resource you can use to estimate the number of households in your community.
You can use the following formulae for this calculation:

    (monthly energy usage) × (12 months per year) = (household energy usage per year);
(yearly energy estimate for your house) × (estimated number of houses in your community) = (estimated yearly energy use for your community)
The following is an example of the above calculation:
    52.8-kilowatt hours (kwh) per month × 12 months = 633.6 kwh;
    633.6 kwh × 200 houses in your community = 126,720 kwh

  • Recommend a realistic, renewable resource to power your community, using your calculated power needs. Consider the following sources: hydropower, solar power, wind turbines, and geothermal energy.
    • Which source would be the best for your community?
    • Justify your choice based on the kind of resources that are available, how much power these alternative sources can produce, and your estimated energy demands for the community.
  • Having recommended an alternative power source, conclude by addressing the following:
    • How realistic is this alternative power source for your community?
    • How will people in your community respond to energy conversion? Will they support it or be against it? Give reasons.
    • How expensive would it be to convert to the alternative power source you recommended? How would this new source impact the environment?
    • What organisms would benefit most from this conversion?

Support your statements with appropriate examples and approximately 4–6 credible resources.

Write an 8–10-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Choose a living organism, and explain how it illustrates each of the characteristics of life.

What does it take to be a living organism?

Living things share eight characteristics (listed in Chapter 1 of your textbook on page 19). A living thing grows, undergoes metabolism, responds to its environment, reproduces, passes DNA to the next generation, maintains homeostasis, changes over time, and is made up of cells. A nonliving thing may seem to do one or more of these things, but to be classified as living, all eight characteristics must be present. Sometimes, you may see something that seems alive but is not. Water, for example, moves, responds to temperature, dissolves substances, erodes rocks, and so on, but it does not have DNA and is not made up of cells. Other times, you may see a thing and think it cannot be alive, yet it is. Coral looks like a rock, but a coral reef is actually made up of millions of tiny animals.

Focus your discussion on only 1 of the following topics:

  • Choose a living organism, and explain how it illustrates each of the characteristics of life.
  • Research and describe an organism or cell in which all 8 characteristics are not obvious. For example, coral looks like it does not move, red blood cells do not reproduce and have no DNA, frogs freeze in the winter and it, therefore, seems as if they do not maintain homeostasis, and so on. Describe the missing feature, and explain how this organism still meets the criteria of a living thing.
  • Compare a living thing with a nonliving thing of your choice that has some of the characteristics that define life. For example, a car exhibits metabolism (burning gas and producing heat), a characteristic of life, but is not alive because it cannot reproduce.
  • Compare and contrast the following pairs based on the 8 characteristics that define life:
    • A rock and a snail
    • A lamp and a tree
  • Discuss some of the characteristics that fire shares with living things (it can grow, it metabolizes, and so on).

Utilize at least 1 credible source to support the arguments presented in your post. Make sure you cite appropriately within your narrative and list the reference(s) in APA format.

Post a description of the respiratory disorder you selected, including its pathophysiology and types of drugs that would be prescribed to treat patients. Then, explain how the factor you selected might impact the pathophysiology of the disorder as well as the effects of prescribed drugs. Finally, explain how you would facilitate the care of the patient with the patient’s care team.

Discussion: Respiratory Disorders

In clinical settings, patients often present with various respiratory symptoms, such as congestion, coughing, and wheezing. While identifying a symptom’s underlying illness can be challenging, it is essential because even basic symptoms, such as persistent coughing, can be a sign of a more severe disorder. Advanced practice nurses must be able to differentiate between moderate and severe respiratory disorders, as well as to properly assist physicians in the diagnosis and prescription of drug treatments for patients. For this reason, it is necessary for you to have an understanding of the pathophysiology of respiratory disorders and patient factors that impact drug treatment.

To prepare:

  • Review this week’s mid course review.
  • Review Chapter 27 of the Huether and McCance text and Chapter 26 and Chapter 27 of the Arcangelo text.
  • Select and research one of the following respiratory disorders: the common cold, pneumonia, or a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis. Consider the pathophysiology, as well as the types of drugs that would be prescribed to patients to treat this disorder.
  • Select one of the following factors: genetics, gender, ethnicity, age, or behavior. Consider how your selected factor might impact the pathophysiology of the disorder and effects of prescribed drugs.
  • Think about how you would facilitate the care of the patient with the patient’s care team. Remember that the care team might include physicians, advanced practice nurses, nurses, nursing assistants, home health aides, social workers, family members, etc.
By Day 3

Review this week’s Learning Resources, focusing on the Six Aims for Improvement presented in the landmark report “Crossing the Quality Chasm: The IOM Health Care Quality Initiative.”

Improving the quality of health care delivery and patient safety continues to be a political concern and has been at the heart of reform issues for many years. The American Nurses Association (ANA) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) have increased awareness of health care quality and safety issues, as well as advocated for health care reform. The documents featured at the ANA and IOM websites listed in this week’s Learning Resources focus on many of the current issues surrounding quality and safety in the health care industry.

To prepare:

  • Review this week’s Learning Resources, focusing on the Six Aims for Improvement presented in the landmark report “Crossing the Quality Chasm: The IOM Health Care Quality Initiative.”
  • Consider these six aims with regard to your current organization, or one with which you are familiar. In what areas have you seen improvement? What areas still present challenges? As a nurse leader, how can you contribute to improving the organization’s achievement of these aims?
  • Select one specific quality or safety issue that is presenting a challenge in the organization. Consider at least one quality improvement strategy that could be used to address the issue, as well as which of the six aims for improvement would then be addressed.
  • Reflect on your professional practice and your experiences with inter-professional collaboration to improve quality and safety. How has inter-professional collaboration contributed to your organization’s efforts to realize the IOM’s six aims for improving health care? Where has inter-professional collaboration been lacking?

Post a description of the quality or safety issue you selected and a brief summary of the impact that this issue has on health care delivery. Describe at least one quality improvement strategy used to address this issue. Then explain which of the six “aims for improvement” are addressed by the strategy. Finally, explain how inter-professional collaboration helps improve quality in this area.

Review “Eye Disorders” and “Ear Disorders” in the Burns et al. text.

In clinical settings, eye, ear, nose, and throat (EENT) disorders account for the majority of pediatric visits. With the prevalence of these disorders, you must be familiar with their signs and symptoms as well as evidence-based practices for assessment and treatment. Although many pediatric patients present with common EENT disorders such as ear infections, allergies, and strep throat, some patients present with rare disorders requiring specialist care. In your role, making this distinction between when to treat and when to refer is essential. For this Discussion, examine the following case studies and consider potential diagnoses and management strategies.

Case Study 1

A mother presents with her 2-year-old child with complaints of ear pain and decreased sleep. Earlier this week, he had a runny nose and congestion with a mild cough that occurred mostly when lying down. His temperature is 100.7°F. You note the following physical findings: shotty anterior cervical adenopathy, mild nasal congestion, clear postnasal drainage, and lungs clear to auscultation. Ear examination reveals the following: right tympanic membrane is red, translucent, in a neutral position, with no pus or fluid noted; left tympanic membrane is full, reddish orange in appearance, and opaque with pus.

Case Study 2

Kaitlyn is a 4-year-old with a 2-day history of nasal congestion and cough in the early morning. Her mother reports thick, green nasal discharge. She is afebrile, and appetite and sleep are normal. Physical examination reveals: lungs clear to auscultation, tympanic membranes pearly gray without fluid in a neutral position, no cervical adenopathy, nasal turbinates are red, and clear rhinorrhea and postnasal drip.

Case Study 3

Marcus is an 8-year-old with a 36-hour complaint of headache (frontal), sore throat, fever to 102°F, and nausea. Mom says his appetite is decreased and his breath smells “like a puppy dog’s.” Physical examination reveals: lungs clear to auscultation, tympanic membranes partially obscured by cerumen but in neutral position and transparent, enlarged tonsilar and anterior cervical lymph nodes, 2+ enlarged and red tonsils with exudate, strawberry tongue, and petechiae on the soft palate.

To prepare:

  • Review “Eye Disorders” and “Ear Disorders” in the Burns et al. text.
  • Review and select one of the three case studies. Analyze the patient information, including the parent’s perspective.
  • Consider a differential diagnosis for the patient in the case study you selected. Think about the most likely diagnosis for the patient.
  • Think about a treatment and management plan for the patient. Be sure to consider appropriate dosages for any recommended pharmacologic and/or non-pharmacologic treatments.
  • Consider strategies for educating parents on the child’s disorder and reducing any concerns/fears presented in the case study.

By Day 3

Post an explanation of the differential diagnosis for the patient in the case study you selected. Explain which is the most likely diagnosis for the patient and why. Include an explanation of unique characteristics of the disorder you identified as the primary diagnosis. Then, explain a treatment and management plan for the patient, including appropriate dosages for any recommended treatments. Finally, explain strategies for educating parents on their child’s disorder and reducing any concerns/fears presented in the case study.a

Determine the mole fraction xA and molar ratio XA of TCE in the wastewater

A clarifier in a wastewater treatment plant contains wastewater with a bulk concentration of TCE of 0.010 kmol m-3.

The clarifier operates at 1.0 atm and a constant temperature of 20 oC. The overall diameter is 2.0 m and it is enclosed to contain the (sometimes smelly) gases which are emitted from the wastewater. Fresh air is blown into this enclosure to remove the gases emitted from the clarifier and is then sent to an incinerator. The TCE content in the gas leaving the clarifier is 4.0 mol %. The liquid film mass transfer coefficient for the clarifier is estimated as kx=0.200 kmol m-2s-1 and the gas film mass transfer coefficient is ky=0.0001 kmol m-2s-1. Assuming that this wastewater has the same molar density and TCE equilibrium relationship as in Question 1, determine the following:

(a) Determine the mole fraction xA and molar ratio XA of TCE in the wastewater

(b) What would be the mole fraction yA* of TCE in the air, if in equilibrium with 0.010 kmol m-3 TCE in the wastewater? (i.e. saturation mole fraction in the gas phase)

(c) What would be the mole fraction xA* of TCE in the wastewater, if in equilibrium with 4 mol% TCE in the air? (i.e. saturation mole fraction in a liquid phase)

(d) Plot Henry’s law relation y*=mx determined in Q1, and indicate xA, xA*, yA, yA* for the clarifier on that plot. What will be the direction of mass transfer of TCE? (i.e. from wastewater to air, or from air to wastewater?) 8 marks (e) Determine the overall mass transfer coefficients Kx and KL

(f) Determine the overall mass transfer coefficients Ky and KG (kmol m-2 s-1 atm-1). 6 marks (g) Determine the rate of mass transfer of TCE to/from the surface of the clarifier

(h) Determine xAi and yAi, the mole fraction of TCE in the liquid and vapor phase, respectively, at the water/air interface. Plot these values on a graph from Q2d.

(i) If the concentration of TCE in the wastewater entering the clarifier is 0.050 kmol m-3, what flowrate of wastewater (m3/h) is required to ensure that the concentration of TCE in wastewater leaving the clarifier is 0.01 kmol m-3? If the depth of liquid in the clarifier is 4 m, what average residence time is required for the wastewater?

Identify HIPAA transactions, code sets, and uniform identifiers.

Privacy and Security of Health Records

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) demands that all patients are able to retrieve their medical records, amend inaccuracies or exclusions, and be informed on how their protected health information (PHI) is shared with third parties. HIPAA provisions have led to a widespread overhauling in electronic medical records. HIPAA laws and regulations are divided into the following five rules.

1. HIPAA Privacy Rule

2. HIPAA Security Rule

3. Transactions and Code Sets Rule

4. The Unique Identifiers Rule

5. Enforcement Rule

After reading the required chapter “Privacy and Security of Health Records,” complete and submit the following in an APA-

formatted scholarly essay.

Begin your essay with an introduction explaining the purpose of the essay. Explain the five rules of HIPAA laws and regulations.

Identify HIPAA transactions, code sets, and uniform identifiers.

Describe HIPAA security requirements and safeguards.

Discuss the importance of contingency plans.

Describe the proper protocol for handling the following scenario under the HIPAA guidelines:

Scenario: A clinician enters orders and requests labs in an electronic patient record, and then leaves the computer without logging off properly. You are working in the area and notice that the computer is on, but you assume someone is coming back in a minute. Meanwhile, a patient wandering the hallway notices that the computer is on and reviews her friend’s patient record. Who is responsible for the patient’s lost privacy? What corrective measures should be taken to ensure the breach of PHI does not happen again?

Write an essay (no less than four pages in length) that states and supports an original thesis statement in which you help challenge society’s limiting gender narratives.

Module 2 – Case

ARGUMENTATION

Case Assignment

Note: Module 2 SLP should be completed before the Module 2 Case.

No secondary sources are to be used in the process of writing this first paper; it is to be entirely written based on one’s point of view and supported with body points and details.

Reflecting on the four gender-related videos for Module 2 (see below), write a well-organized and well-supported essay in which you help challenge society’s limiting gender narratives.

A well-organized essay has a beginning, middle, and an end. The beginning, or introduction, should include an opening sentence to grab your reader’s attention. Follow the opening sentence with a brief background on the topic or situation. In this case, it would be an explanation of gender roles, stereotypes, myths, and/or controls in society today. The last sentence of the introduction is the thesis statement. The thesis states the main point of the essay, which in this case, would be a statement affirming what needs to be done to limit gender narratives in society today.

A well-supported essay includes supporting points, details, and examples. For this essay, you must decide the best way to organize the body of the paper. Will you have a paragraph for each change? Will you divide the body of your paper into three or more paragraphs, one for each point? In any case, each body paragraph must support (explain) your reasoning (rationale) using specific details. Each body paragraph must have a topic sentence that states the main point of the paragraph.

The conclusion typically summarizes the main points of the essay and/or closes with a lasting impression that connects the reader to their world. In this case, where is our society headed? Is it too late for change?

Be sure to proofread your essay and edit for proper grammar, punctuation, diction (word choice), and spelling, as errors in sentence skills will lower a final grade. A grade will be determined based on the Module 2 Case expectations and the Trident University General Education rubric for English.

Papers must be double-spaced in Times or Times New Roman font (12 cpi) with standard one-inch margins.

The first person “I” is not used in a formal essay.

This essay must include no less than SIX citations from the assigned background material for module 2. Citations are to be a combination of direct quotations and paraphrased quotations with or without the author’s name. No other sources are to be used for this assignment.

Assignment Expectations

  • Write an essay (no less than four pages in length) that states and supports an original thesis statement in which you help challenge society’s limiting gender narratives.
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify credible and reliable sources for use in a well-supported and cohesive essay.
  • Demonstrate the ability to write a direct quote, paraphrased, or summary citation in APA Style
